Southwestern Christmas ornaments. Steel with irredescent copper.
These pieces can be used as wall hangings OR ornaments (by adding a piece of ribbon to the wall hanger on the back).
The technique used on these pieces comes from a pottery form called Raku. The designer, Fred Rhoades, begins with a design in mind and creates the intial template.
Each piece is cut from metal and pounded into the proper shape (many are cupped, bent, etc to add the 3-D effect).
Additional pieces (such as antennae, hangers on the back for wall mounting, etc.) are braised on as necessary and any additional brass on the item is also attached by braising.
Next copper is melted and dripped onto each piece and buffed.
Finally, the copper is heated and oxidized which gives it the irredescence and beautiful rainbow of colors.
The Chili, Small Sun, Cactus, Fish (assorted), Dolphin and Turtle all have a largest dimension of about 3" and are $5.99.
The Frog (5"X4"), Dragonfly (6"X6"), Large Sun (4" across) and Butterfly (4"X4") are all larger and are $7.99.
Individual pieces vary somewhat due to hand crafting.
Designed in USA, some components made in Mexico.
